Christopher Wood

Senior Scientist

Mr. Chris Wood is a geologist with 8 years of experience in soil, air, and groundwater investigation, and soil and groundwater remediation, as well as litigation support. His experience includes managing and leading soil and groundwater site investigations; managing monitoring and sampling programs; implementing various drilling and push technologies; overseeing in situ remedial injection pilot programs for chlorinated solvents; managing the installation of groundwater monitoring wells; and managing the operations and maintenance of large-scale extraction well networks. In addition, he uses QGIS and Surfer to complete data analysis and prepare environmental drawings.

Groundwater Remediation

Groundwater Remediation and Monitoring at an Industrial Facility, Rochester, New York Managed groundwater monitoring activities and the operation and maintenance of a remedial pumping system comprising 40 extraction wells for hydraulic control and mass contaminant removal. Extraction well operations and maintenance included supporting the design and leading the implementation of replacing an offline dual-phase extraction system with a hydraulic extraction well network. Led the annual field teams for large-scale groundwater monitoring and sampling events for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), leachate, 1,4-dioxane, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at the active industrial facility, a closed Part 360 landfill, and other offsite areas associated with the industrial facility. Additionally, led semiannual groundwater monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of a groundwater injection remedy. Other responsibilities included leading reporting efforts, conducting trend analysis, acting as the point of contact for stakeholders, supporting property change-in-use determinations, developing work plans and health and safety plans, managing subcontractors, and reporting data to state stakeholders via EQuIS.
Groundwater Investigation and Remediation, Rochester, New York Led annual groundwater sampling, analyzed groundwater analytical data to determine the horizontal and lateral extent of VOCs in the overburden and bedrock aquifers, and provided reporting support. In addition, oversaw an in situ chemical oxidation injection as part of a pilot study to decrease the VOC concentrations in bedrock. Pilot study activities included the installation of two new bedrock wells for monitoring and treatment injection, real-time plume monitoring during injection, baseline groundwater sampling, follow-up groundwater sampling to evaluate the efficacy of treatment over time, and GIS figure production.

Site Investigation

Soil and Groundwater Investigation at a Former Wood Treating Facility, Navassa, North Carolina Supported soil and groundwater investigations related to former creosote wood treating, including subcontractor management, work plan development, and project management support.
Soil Investigation at a Former Manufacturing Plant, Middleport, New York Led a multi-year remedial design effort to sample surface and subsurface soil for remediation. Determined sample locations in the field in accordance with DER-10 Technical Guidance for Site Investigation and Remediation. Soil cores were collected by direct push, hand corer, and soil auger. Soil cores were described in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System and sampled in discrete intervals to laterally and horizontally characterize the extent of subsurface metals contamination. Additional responsibilities included developing work plans, health and safety plans, and managing subcontractors.
Soil Investigation at a Former Foundry, Geneva, New York Led a multi-year remedial design effort to sample surface and subsurface soil for remediation. Additional responsibilities included developing work plans and health and safety plans, and managing subcontractors.
Former Electric Products Facility (Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program [FUSRAP] Site), Long Island, New York Oversaw rotary sonic drilling and monitoring well installation, classified overburden soil, and conducted groundwater sampling to support vertical profiling of groundwater contaminants.
Groundwater, Soil, Sediment, and Surface Water Investigation, Lockport, New York Led groundwater sampling to investigate the presence of chlorinated solvents, sediment sampling for biological risk assessment and sediment transport modeling, and floodplain soil sampling to identify extent of PCB and metals contamination downstream of the source area. Also conducted surface water sampling in support of sediment transport model.
Groundwater and Soil Investigation of a Former Textile Supplier, Rochester, New York Participated in two phases of work concerning groundwater and soil contamination. During the first phase, oversaw the installation of several monitoring wells via hollow-stem auger, described overburden soil and bedrock cores, and conducted several groundwater sampling events in an effort to characterize subsurface soil and groundwater contamination at the site. During the second phase, led the field effort to locate the source area at the site and characterize the vertical and horizontal extent of soil contamination. Soil cores were described in the field and monitored for obvious VOC contamination to determine sampling intervals. Following the field efforts, contributed to the remedial investigation report by compiling and analyzing the subsurface soil and groundwater results, creating figures depicting the groundwater and soil contamination, and compiling data tables. Additional responsibilities included contributing to the work plan, health and safety plan, subcontractor management, and GIS figure production.
Soil Investigation at a Former Dry Cleaner, Rochester, New York Conducted subsurface soil sampling and monitoring well installation via direct-push and hollow-stem auger to delineate the extent of vertical and horizontal subsurface contamination in soil. Conducted groundwater sampling to delineate the extent of contamination. Led the soil boring investigation of an alley associated with the site with step-out locations added in real time based on the obvious presence of contaminated soil to delineate the extent of contamination within the alley. Additional responsibilities included contributing to the work plan, the health and safety plan, subcontractor management, and GIS figure production.

Groundwater Monitoring

Former Industrial Plant (FUSRAP Site), Middlesex, New Jersey Conducted oversight for air rotary drilling, installation, and development of monitoring wells. Conducted groundwater sampling to support vertical and horizontal delineation of shallow and deep aquifer contamination. Additional activities included borehole logging, downhole gamma logging, well development, and packer sampling.

Remediation Construction Oversight

Hudson River Superfund Site, Saratoga Springs, New York Oversaw dredging and backfill operations as an onsite client representative. Recorded daily activities and observed conformance of the site activities with EPA environmental standards. Additionally, conducted oversight of a contractor conducting floodplains sampling as an onsite client representative, performed onsite property characterizations, and observed the subcontractor for conformance with EPA environmental standards.

Planning and Permitting

Offshore Pipeline Permitting, Staten Island, New York Conducted oversight of preconstruction operations, including sediment coring via viabracore and direct-push methods; sediment characterization; and identification of organic layers to sample to delineate the extent of potential contaminants, minimize disposal waste generated during future construction activities, and identify a potential offshore disposal area based on grain-size data in accordance with federal stakeholders. Worked directly with the onsite client representative and contractor field team as a liaison to accomplish tasks in a timely and efficient manner. In addition to oversight responsibilities, managed samples, sample deliveries, and sample location schedule based on laboratory constraints.

Litigation Support

Litigation Support, Water Treatment and Site Remediation Complaint, Confidential Location, Florida Supported expert report for the evaluation of claims regarding the occurrence and mitigation of PFAS in groundwater, including potable groundwater supplies.
