Integral Has Banner Year on Contaminated Sediment Projects

January 20 2009

In 2008, Integral’s sediment scientists, ecologists, and engineers were busier than ever with new projects on both U.S. coasts and continuation of existing projects around the country.

New contract awards included environmental services to conduct a large sampling program for Washington Closure Hanford on the Columbia River and a site characterization project at the Jemez Canyon Reservoir in New Mexico. Integral won new projects in San Diego Bay and Baltimore Harbor, building upon our innovative work on groundwater/sediment interactions. We were also awarded two new projects in western Washington to characterize sediments in advance of maintenance dredging.

Much of Integral’s new and ongoing work focuses on the potential risks associated with contaminated sediments. Based on our risk expertise, we were selected to help perform a Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study (RI/FS) for the Berry’s Creek CERCLA site in New Jersey—one of the first sites within the Superfund program to undergo a watershed-wide investigation. We are also leading implementation of the RI/FS for Washington’s 150-mile-long Upper Columbia River site. Other risk-related sediment work includes assessing the influence of organic carbon on sediment toxicity near a pulp mill in Minnesota and final monitoring of a sediment capping project in Ward Cove, Alaska.

Integral continues to lead the Portland Harbor sediment remedial investigation with innovative work in groundwater/sediment interactions, site characterization, source evaluation and data visualization. And we continue to support the litigation process relative to contaminated sediments with two new projects along the shores of Puget Sound.

Not to be outdone, our engineers provided design and construction oversight of a sediment remediation and oyster restoration project in Coos Bay, Oregon; continued support on the Greens Bayou, Texas sediment remediation project; and oversaw remedial design activities along a portion of Washington’s Lower Duwamish Waterway.

Integral is sharing its sediment expertise internationally in 2009 by co-sponsoring Battelle’s Fifth International Conference on the Remediation of Contaminated Sediments (February 2–5, 2009 in Jacksonville, Florida). Our scientists and engineers are giving eleven platform presentations/posters on a variety of topics involving sediment investigation and remediation.
